A Canadian researcher has discovered that a Chinese version of eBay Inc.’s Skype communications software snoops on text chats that contain certain keywords, including democracy. The revelation is not only of interest to rights groups that monitor Internet censorship. The discovery also likely intrigues law enforcement and intelligence agencies in other countries, because they have been bothered by the growing use of Skype, which claims 338 million users across the world.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc said on Friday it plans to buy privately held Jabber Inc, which specializes in instant messaging software, to bolster its own line of Internet-based communications products. The two companies did not disclose financial terms. Denver-based Jabber provides open instant messaging technology that supports different devices and applications, and allows users on separate networks, such as Google Talk or Yahoo Messenger, to connect with each other.

Today, the Mountain View, Calif. company is announcing 11 new additions, including IBeatYou, OrangeShark, PerfSpot, UGAME.net, Yaari, Zinch, Zorpia, Bleacher Report, Dhingana, Fanpop and GlobalGrind. Internet gear giant Cisco has announced a deal to acquire privately-held Internet messaging and “presence” company Jabber for an undisclosed amount. Based in Denver, Jabber develops and provides communication services, including instant messaging technology that’s interoperable between different platforms and applications and can, for instance, act as a gateway between normally isolated services like Google Talk, Microsoft’s Office Communication Service, IBM SameTime, and Yahoo Messenger.

Cisco plans to use the technology to enhance its existing Internet-based communications products.
