Jabber provides instant messaging software that is compatible with other networks. The product allows users to communicate on a variety of networks including Google Talk, AOL AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Microsoft Office Communications Server and IBM Sametime. Cisco plans to use the technology to enhance its existing Internet-based communications products. It will allow Cisco to use the product across multiple platforms including Cisco WebEx Connect and Cisco Unified Communications.

Cisco has bought an enterprise instant messaging (IM) specialist, Jabber, for an undisclosed amount in a bid to expand its software business. Based in Denver, Jabber develops an open IM platform that can integrate third-party apps, such as Microsoft Office, IBM Sametime, AOL’s AIM, Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger. The platform will become part of Cisco’s Collaboration portfolio.

Beijing (China) - A group of computer security researchers and human-rights activists based in Canada at the University of Toronto recently found a gigantic surveillance system in China that is being utilized to monitor and archive Internet text conversations that contain politically charged wording. The system is capable of tracking text messages that are sent by TOM-Skype customers. TOM-Skype is a joint venture between eBay and a Chinese wireless provider.

NEW YORK (AP) A Canadian researcher has discovered that a Chinese version of eBay Inc.’s Skype communications software snoops on text chats that contain certain keywords, including “democracy.” The revelation is not only of interest to rights groups that monitor Internet censorship. The discovery also likely intrigues law enforcement and intelligence agencies in other countries, because they have been bothered by the growing use of Skype, which claims 338 million users across the world.

San Jose, California-based communications MNC Cisco announced yesterday that it has purchased open instant messaging technology provider Jabber Incorporated, in an attempt to improve their messaging features and also expand the current capabilities of their collaboration platform. This deal comes only a day after Cisco announced that it had completed its acquisition of PostPath Inc., an e-mail and calendaring software company, for $215 million.
